$26.00-$33.00/hour
A “mechanical sheet metal technician” is a skilled tradesperson who primarily installs mechanical systems like pipes, ductwork, and structural components within a construction project, often working as part of a mechanical contracting company, requiring them to interpret blueprints, fabricate metal parts, and ensure proper quality while adhering to safety protocols and project specifications.
Key responsibilities of a mechanical sheet metal technician:
•Reading and interpreting blueprints: Accurately read and understand construction plans, drawings, and specifications to determine installation types and required dimensions and locations.
•Metal fabrication: Cut, fit, and prepare metal components (pipes, sheet metal, structural steel) for installations using various cutting tools, such as saws, grinders, and plasma cutters.
•Quality control: Inspect installations for defects and perform necessary rework to meet quality standards.
•Fitting and alignment: Ensure proper alignment of components during the installation, using clamps, fixtures, and leveling tools. Ability to lay out low voltage wiring as well as work to install smoke detectors, annunciators, and copper line sets.
•Safety compliance: Adhere to all safety procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety glasses, and welding helmets.
•Collaboration: Coordinate installation and other activities effectively with other tradespeople on the construction site, including plumbers, welders, electricians, and service technicians.
Specific skills required for a mechanical contractor welder:
•Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
•Knowledge of metal fabrication techniques
•Strong hand-eye coordination and dexterity
•Attention to detail and quality control
•Physical stamina to work in demanding positions and environments
Work environment:
•Primarily on construction sites, working outdoors in various weather conditions
•May involve working in confined spaces or at elevated heights
•Exposure to noise and other types of equipment
Completion of apprenticeship program required.
