Spotlight on the Manufacturing Sector

What is manufacturing work?

Manufacturing work is the process of producing goods using labor, machinery, and various tools in an industrial setting. Manufacturers take raw materials and transform them into products to sell to consumers or other industries. From creating simple goods to the production of complex machinery and technology, manufacturing work encompasses a wide range of jobs.

The key facets of manufacturing work include production processes, use of machinery and equipment, skilled and unskilled labor, quality control measures, and assembly lines, among many others.

The history of the manufacturing sector

Manufacturing dates back to prehistoric and even ancient times when human societies used tools to create items such as pottery and textiles. Around 3000 BC, people mastered metalworking to create more sophisticated tools and weapons. The Industrial Revolution saw advancements in the textile industry, mass production with assembly lines, and the steam engine which powered machinery and revolutionized the field.

From the widespread adoption of electricity as a power source to the automobile industry the early 20th century saw new processes and machines innovate manufacturing. Finally, in the late 20th century and up to the present, computers and automation advanced manufacturing technologies to what they are today.

As the sector grew and time passed, the manufacturing field expanded to include a wide variety of industries and jobs.

Manufacturing employment

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported there were more than 12.7 million workers employed in the manufacturing industry in 2022. Transportation equipment manufacturing is the largest sector in 16 states, while in 19 states and the District of Columbia, food manufacturing tops the list.

According to the National Association of Manufacturers, there were 627,000 manufacturing job openings as of September 2023 with 4 million new manufacturing positions expected by 2030. Clearly, business is good and employment opportunities abound.

The future outlook for the manufacturing sector

Experts foresee continued growth and investment in the U.S. manufacturing industry for the year ahead.  Technology advancements continue to revolutionize manufacturing operations improving aspects of the industry such as production monitoring, metrics accuracy, and production efficiencies. In the not too distant future, manufacturers will reap the benefits of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics in their operations.
